Find Your Perfect Cruise

Can I smoke on board a cruise ship?

Smoking policies vary across the different Cruise Lines but there are generally always designated smoking areas on board.

Cruise ships generally do not permit smoking anywhere indoors on board, including within your stateroom, however, some cruise ships may have exceptions to this rule.

Some ships may provide a designated Smoking area within the Casino, or there may be enclosed cigar lounges on board where smoking is also permitted.

Other than this smoking is normally restricted to outside areas on the highest decks on either the port or aft side of the ship. Ashtrays are also provided in these areas.

Most cruise lines also do not permit smoking on Balconies of cruise ship staterooms, with the exception of Holland America Line.

Considerate smokers who want to least offend other guests should look towards a balcony stateroom as far aft as possible as this is the direction in which the smoke tends to drift back while the ship is in motion. Sensitive non-smokers should in turn consider booking a balcony stateroom as far forward as possible, for the same reason.

Below is provided a quick reference grid, detailing current Cruise Line policies as at February 2015. These Smoking policies do vary across the different cruise lines and ships, and are subject to amendment, so we would always recommended that you check with your individual cruise operator for the most up to date information prior to your departure.
