Small Ship Magic - Azamara Onward Review

I had never sailed with Azamara Cruises before, so I was eager to explore what sets this cruise line apart. With its small ship concept promising a more intimate atmosphere and deeper destination immersion, I was excited to see if it lived up to its reputation.

Having just returned from Azamara Onward, I can say with confidence that I have been completely charmed by this beautiful ship.

Purpose built with a smaller-sized design that allows her to cross oceans, cruise along scenic waterways and dock at breathtaking locations that larger ships cannot access – this unique cruising experience is unlike any other. Consisting of 3 sister ships, the wonderful Azamara fleet presents the ultimate opportunity to immerse yourself thoroughly in any destination. With longer stays in port than any other cruise line and a wonderful selection of overnight stays too, you are able to enjoy your itinerary in a much more relaxed and stress-free manner.

One key influence that I took away from this trip was that Azamara truly are all about the people. With under 700 guests and a team of 375 dedicated crew members on board, your every need is promptly catered for. What’s more, it’s not just a ‘service’ you receive... you get to know the crew by name, engage in friendly conversation and receive a much more personable experience in comparison to anything I have received before. By only our second day, our charismatic Barista had already retained my intricate coffee order and had it prepped and waiting for me each day thereafter – amazing!

With Azamara, their fundamental objective during the construction of their immersive itineraries is the guest experience. As a result of this, you can expect to wake up each day to the most inspiring backdrops in the world, whilst only being a short walk to the beating heart of quaint town centres – a very refreshing change to dreaded coach transfers... which is so often a necessity with the larger cruise ships that can only access larger ports. When sailing into Saint Tropez we were moored only a stone’s throw from the luxurious yachts and niche boutique – a truly magical setting.

On board, as you take in the modern and contemporary surroundings, you can expect a more relaxed and laidback atmosphere. You are encouraged to throw formality to one side and dress for dinner exactly how you please. In terms of dining options, they were extensive... and did not disappoint! My favourite venue was the Windows Café. Here, you can eat alfresco and there is a different culinary theme each night, often embracing the flavours of the port you are sailing from which I thought was a wonderful touch! A few of our group were vegetarian and vegan and they were extremely delighted by the creative menus and choice across the ship.

One evening that I will never forget was the celebrated Azamara White Night – a real highlight of any Azamara sailing. By night, the spacious pool deck is transformed into an exceptional dining and entertainment venue, with guests of all demographics dressed up in their finest white garments, ready to party. The food was particularly fabulous this night, with treats ranging from lobster and fillet steaks to cheese boards and indulgent deserts. The entire ship danced the night away to the backdrop of the French Riviera, whilst the entertainment team performed live for over 2 hours – a genuine pinch me moment during this sailing. And, when the night became a little bit too fresh, cosy blankets were on hand to keep the party going just that little bit longer.

A special mention must also be made for the AzAmazing Evenings – Azamara’s complimentary on board excursion programme that allow the guests to experience the authentic culture and entertainment of the destination. Of course, for those who just want to relax and enjoy some quiet time, there are many alternatives such as cosy loungers to enjoy reading or daily afternoon tea spreads. Spa treatments can also be enjoyed and I can vouch that the shops on board are fantastic... especially the jewellery. I couldn’t resist a purchase!

In summary, you can expect to uncover more interesting ports of call and enjoy experiences that would be well-nigh impossible to recreate yourself, whilst also gaining a more intimate connection with your fellow guests and crew. Combine all of this together and you are guaranteed to create once-in-a-lifetime memories that promise to leave a smile on your face.
